Workplace Investigations

Grievance Handling & Independent Investigations

When an employee raises a formal complaint or grievance, it needs to be handled with care, clarity, and credibility especially when it involves sensitive matters or senior colleagues.

We provide independent support to manage the process from start to finish. We can lead the grievance on your behalf, carry out a thorough and impartial investigation, and deliver a clear, well-evidenced report with outcome recommendations you can trust.

We’re also regularly appointed as an independent chair to hear grievance appeals, bringing fairness, balance and professionalism to even the most complex cases.

Because how you handle a grievance speaks volumes about the kind of culture you want to create.

Disciplinary Independent Investigations

If you're dealing with a disciplinary matter, we can manage the investigation for you thoroughly, fairly, and professionally.

We're experts in conducting disciplinary investigations, bringing not just legal rigour, but emotional intelligence and discretion, especially where allegations are sensitive or complex.

Our approach is robust and diligent, but always balanced by care ensuring individuals are treated with dignity and respect throughout the process.

Because getting it right isn’t just about the outcome, it’s about how you get there.

Role of an Independent Investigator

When an colleague raises a complaint or grievance, how it's handled matters, not just legally, but ethically and culturally. The investigator plays a crucial role in ensuring the process is fair, thorough, and objective.  We approach investigations through the lens of our core values: acting with integrity, building trust, using common sense, promoting fairness, leaning into challenge, and having the courage to do what’s right,  even when it’s hard.

Impartiality
Investigators must remain neutral and unbiased throughout. That means approaching the case with an open mind, avoiding conflicts of interest, and focusing only on the facts. This reflects our commitment to fairness, integrity, and trust creating a process where everyone is treated with respect and where confidence in the outcome can be maintained.

Confidentiality
Grievances often involve sensitive matters. Maintaining confidentiality demonstrates trustworthiness and professional judgement. Investigators are expected to handle all information discreetly, protecting the privacy and dignity of those involved.

Gathering Information
Our approach is rooted in common sense and professional rigour. Investigators collect all relevant documentation and speak to the necessary people including the complainant, respondent, and any witnesses. The goal is to ask the right questions, listen actively, and understand the full context from all sides.

Analysing Evidence
This is where integrity and challenge intersect. It’s not just about ticking boxes it’s about carefully weighing the facts, identifying patterns, spotting inconsistencies, and making fair, evidence-based assessments. Investigators must have the courage to ask difficult questions and the clarity to separate opinion from fact.

Documentation
Good documentation builds trust in the process. Investigators must record every stage of the process, including interviews, timelines, findings, and outcomes with accuracy, transparency, and care.

Report Writing
A well-written investigation report brings together all the evidence, explains the process followed, and sets out clear, reasoned conclusions. It should reflect the fairness, integrity, and professionalism that underpin the entire investigation.

Recommendations
Where appropriate, investigators may suggest actions to resolve the issue and prevent recurrence  from changes to process, to training or mediation. These are offered with common sense, a forward-thinking mindset, and a commitment to making things better.

Compliance
All investigations must align with organisational policies and legal requirements. We take this seriously not just to minimise risk, but because doing things properly is how we show integrity, earn trust, and maintain fairness for all involved.
